How National Grid energy in Lackawanna came about

In Great Britain in 1990, the Central Electricity Generating Board’s duties were transferred to The National Grid Company, which was owned by 12 different regional electricity companies. In 1995, it was listed on the London Stock Exchange. In 2000, the company stretched its reach to America and acquired New England Electric System and Eastern Utilities Associates.

It moved on to New York in January 2002 and acquired Niagara Mohawk Holdings Inc. In October of that same year, the company merged with Lattice Group plc, the owner of gas distributer Transco. The name was changed to National Grid Transco and downsizing followed, with the selling of four of its regional gas distribution networks in 2004. NGT kept its other four networks, which were practically half of England’s gas distribution networks. In 2005, the company changed its name to National Grid Electricity Transmission plc.

Other acquisitions followed; in 2007, it bought KeySpan, an American electricity producer and gas distributor, for $7.3 billion. Also that year, the acquisition of the Southern Union Company subsidiary, New England Gas Company in Rhode Island, took place. These two events doubled the size of the company’s American subsidiary, making it the second largest utility in the United States with more than 8 million customers, according to the company's website.
